Madonna and Child with Nine Angels
Segna di Bonaventura·1315
Historical Context
Segna di Bonaventura, nephew and pupil of the great Duccio, painted this Madonna and Child with Nine Angels around 1315, perpetuating the master's refined Byzantine-Gothic synthesis. The angelic host surrounding the Virgin reflects the hierarchical celestial theology central to Gothic devotional imagery. The panel preserves the conservative Sienese tradition of richly decorated sacred icons at a time when Florentine painters were moving toward greater naturalism.
Technical Analysis
Tempera and gold leaf on panel with elaborate tooled punchwork decorating the haloes and borders. The composition follows Byzantine Maestà prototypes, with symmetrically arranged angels flanking the central group, while the gold ground creates an otherworldly, transcendent space.
