Paris (right end panel)
Francesco di Giorgio·1460
Historical Context
Francesco di Giorgio's Paris (right end panel) completes the Oenone story triptych, depicting the Trojan prince who initiated the catastrophe of the Trojan War through his fateful judgment and abandonment of the nymph who loved him. Paris's end panel presence — facing toward the right as the final element of the narrative — would have created a spatial dialogue with the Oenone panel at the left, enclosing the central meeting scene between figures who would eventually represent the story's tragedy. Francesco di Giorgio's classical narrative panels demonstrate the sophisticated literary culture of late fifteenth-century Sienese patrician patronage.
Technical Analysis
Francesco di Giorgio's elegant figure of Paris is rendered with the refined draughtsmanship and lyrical landscape setting characteristic of his mature Sienese style.
