Group of characters
Georges Seurat·1884
Historical Context
Group of Characters is a compositional study related to Seurat's preparations for his large figure compositions, exploring the arrangement of multiple standing and seated figures in a park or outdoor setting. Throughout the mid-1880s, Seurat made numerous character studies as he developed his understanding of figure-ground relationships and the static, freeze-like quality he wanted to achieve — influenced by his study of Piero della Francesca's measured compositions and Egyptian bas-reliefs in the Louvre. These figure studies were rarely exhibited and functioned primarily as working documents.
Technical Analysis
The grouping is handled with simplified silhouettes and minimal gestural detail characteristic of Seurat's preparatory figure work. Colour relationships are established through the divisionist method, each figure distinct through complementary tonal treatment.
