George Moore in the Artist's Garden

The Irish-born writer George Moore was a prominent figure in Manet's circle during the 1870s and 1880s, a regular at the Café de la Nouvelle Athènes where the Impressionist group gathered, and later a fierce advocate for Manet's reputation in English-language criticism. Manet's casual garden portrait of Moore — seated among vegetation rather than posed formally — belongs to the series of informal outdoor character studies from his final years. Moore later wrote admiringly of Manet's ability to capture personality through apparently effortless paint handling.
