Saint Matthias (?) and a Donor; Saint Andrew (reverse)
Historical Context
Jacob Cornelisz van Oostsanen painted these saint panels with donors around 1522, demonstrating the continued demand for traditional altarpiece components in the northern Netherlands. His Amsterdam workshop produced such wing panels in significant numbers. Saint panels were fundamental units of Renaissance altarpiece production, produced individually or as wings of polyptychs, and served the devotional needs of the commissioning church, guild, or confraternity whose patron saint they depicted.
Technical Analysis
The panels show Jacob Cornelisz's characteristic warm palette with careful saint and donor characterization in the decorative style of his mature Amsterdam workshop.
