Portrait of a Man by Master of Alkmaar

Portrait of a Man

Master of Alkmaar·1507

Historical Context

The Master of Alkmaar painted this Portrait of a Man in 1507. While primarily known for narrative religious panels, this master also produced portraits that document the appearance of Dutch townspeople at the turn of the 16th century. The sober format reflects the practical, unpretentious character of Dutch bourgeois portraiture. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.

Technical Analysis

Oil on panel with straightforward, naturalistic rendering of the sitter's features. The restrained palette and simple background focus attention on the individual's physiognomy and character.
