Final Study for "Bathers at Asnières"

Painted in 1883 and now at the Art Institute of Chicago—the same institution that holds the final 'Bathers at Asnières' canvas—this final preparatory study records the last stage of Seurat's preparation before the monumental canvas. The Art Institute study is the most complete and resolved of the preparatory panels, functioning as a reduced replica of the intended composition. Its proximity to the final canvas allows direct comparison of how the studio study's more fluid handling was translated into the systematic pointillist surface of the exhibited work, which at the time of its completion was not yet fully divisionist.

The final study is painted with considerably more finish and colour precision than the earlier exploratory panels. Forms are clear, the compositional logic resolved, and the colour system for each zone of the painting established. The technique anticipates the larger canvas's emerging divisionism.
