Interiør med indisk kvinde

Interiør med indisk kvinde (Interior with Indian Woman), at the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen, dates to around 1930 and shows Dufy's interest in Orientalist interior subjects, placing an Indian or North African female figure in a decoratively furnished French interior. The presence of the work in Copenhagen reflects the active Scandinavian collecting of French Post-Impressionist and modernist work during the interwar period. Dufy's Orientalist subjects were produced at a moment when the exoticising tradition begun by Delacroix and continued through Matisse was still considered a legitimate artistic domain.

Dufy integrates the figure within the interior through his characteristic colour-field approach — washes of blue and warm tone establishing the room, the figure sitting within rather than against the environment. His drawn line defines the figure's costume and gesture with rapid notational economy.
