Vilhelm Hammershøi's painting of the buildings of the Asiatic Company seen from St. Annæ Street in Copenhagen (1902) is an architectural subject treated with his characteristic silent intensity. The Asiatic Company, founded in 1732, operated a grand building complex in central Copenhagen that represented Denmark's mercantile ambitions in Asia. Hammershøi was drawn to Copenhagen's older, grander architecture — the geometry of brick and stone facades seen in still, grey light without human activity. The Statens Museum for Kunst holds this as part of its significant collection of his architectural Copenhagen views.

Hammershøi renders the facade with characteristic tonal restraint — greys, whites, and warm stone tones in a palette of extreme quietude. The street is empty, the architecture depopulated, giving the scene the quality of a world suspended outside of time. Paint is applied smoothly without expressive impasto, emphasising the cool, contemplative surface of the image.
