The Christ Child Worshipped by Mary
Antonio Solario·1502
Historical Context
Antonio Solario painted this Christ Child Worshipped by Mary in 1502. Known as Lo Zingaro, Solario combined his Venetian training with influences from Netherlandish and central Italian art to create a distinctive hybrid style. His devotional works were popular in Naples and the Adriatic regions where he principally worked. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with rich coloring that reflects Solario's Venetian background. The intimate devotional format emphasizes the tender relationship between mother and child through warm tones and soft atmospheric effects.
