An Avenue in Søndermarken. Frederiksberg
Albert Gottschalk·1889
Historical Context
Albert Gottschalk painted numerous views of Copenhagen's parks and suburban landscapes, developing a distinctive approach to urban naturalism that captured the particular quality of light in the Danish capital's green spaces. Søndermarken, part of the Frederiksberg park system on the western edge of Copenhagen, was a popular subject for Danish painters. This 1889 view of an avenue in the park in autumn exemplifies Gottschalk's quiet attentiveness to seasonal change and the way falling light filters through trees. The painting is in Statens Museum for Kunst.
Technical Analysis
Gottschalk structures the composition around the strong receding perspective of the avenue's trees, their bare or thinning canopies creating a pattern of overlapping branches against the pale autumn sky.
