St Cecilia
Raphael·1514
Historical Context
Raphael painted this Saint Cecilia around 1514 for the Statens Museum for Kunst. A copy after or variant of his famous Bologna altarpiece, it depicts the patron saint of music surrounded by other saints, in a composition that represents one of Raphael's most harmonious achievements in balancing figure grouping and emotional expression. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
The composition demonstrates the perfect balance of Raphael's mature style, with figures arranged in a rhythmic group of extraordinary grace, unified by the warm atmospheric light and harmonious coloring of the High Renaissance ideal.
