St Catherine of Alexandria
Bernardino Luini·1513
Historical Context
St Catherine of Alexandria from 1513 by Bernardino Luini is another version of the learned virgin martyr, a subject to which the artist returned repeatedly. Catherine's combination of beauty, learning, and faith made her an ideal vehicle for Luini's gentle devotional style Oil on canvas, increasingly preferred over panel in the sixteenth century, offered greater flexibility for large-scale compositions The work is now in the collection of Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen.
Technical Analysis
The saint displays Luini's characteristic soft beauty, with the sfumato technique creating gentle transitions of light and shadow across the idealized features.
