Kronborg

This 1904 view of Kronborg Castle by Gottschalk — one of several he made of the famous Helsingør fortress — shows the building from a different angle or under different conditions than his other versions. Kronborg's massive Renaissance profile had been a Danish pictorial subject for centuries, and Gottschalk's approach strips away historical grandeur in favour of atmospheric directness, treating the castle as one element in a coastal landscape.

The castle's towers and walls are rendered with Gottschalk's characteristic economy — architectural detail subordinated to tonal and atmospheric truth. The Øresund strait provides a horizontal counter to the vertical towers, and the sky is handled with broad, free strokes that give the composition movement and air.
