Mucius Scaevola in the presence of Lars Porsenna
Matthias Stom·1640
Historical Context
The Roman hero Mucius Scaevola thrusting his hand into fire before the Etruscan king Lars Porsenna was a subject celebrating stoic courage—perfectly suited to dramatic candlelight treatment. Stom painted this around 1640, during his Sicilian years, and it traveled far from Italy to its current home at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney. The subject’s emphasis on defiant self-sacrifice resonated with Counter-Reformation values of martyrdom and fortitude.
Technical Analysis
Firelight from the brazier illuminates Scaevola’s resolute expression and Porsenna’s astonishment in contrasting registers of warm light. The composition arranges the figures around the central flame with theatrical precision.
