Battle of Pharsalus and the Beheading of Pompey by Apollonio di Giovanni

Battle of Pharsalus and the Beheading of Pompey

Apollonio di Giovanni·1460

Historical Context

Apollonio di Giovanni's Battle of Pharsalus and Beheading of Pompey continues his workshop's celebrated production of cassoni depicting scenes from classical history and literature. The Battle of Pharsalus, where Julius Caesar defeated Pompey to establish his dominance over Rome, was among the most dramatically decisive episodes in Roman history, and the subsequent tragic murder of Pompey in Egypt provided narrative contrast. Apollonio's panoramic battle scene and the subsequent beheading compress Lucan's epic narrative into the continuous format of cassone painting, filling the panel with the military spectacle appropriate to celebrating Florentine families' martial ambitions.

Technical Analysis

The panoramic battle scene employs Apollonio's signature style of continuous narrative, with small, brightly colored figures dispersed across a wide landscape in a decorative composition that prioritizes storytelling over spatial depth.
