Portrait of Frederik Christian Krag (1726-1763) by Louis Tocqué

Portrait of Frederik Christian Krag (1726-1763)

Louis Tocqué·1761

Historical Context

Louis Tocqué was among the most accomplished French portraitists of the mid-eighteenth century, and his Portrait of Frederik Christian Krag (1726–1763) from 1761 is an example of his European reach: Krag was a Danish nobleman, and Tocqué had made a celebrated journey to Copenhagen and St. Petersburg in 1756–1759, painting members of the Danish and Russian courts. This portrait, dated 1761, may have been produced during or as a consequence of that northern journey. Tocqué's technical mastery of silk, velvet, and skin textures made him one of the most sought-after portraitists across European courts.

Technical Analysis

Tocqué renders Krag in the formal mode appropriate to a Nordic nobleman, with careful attention to the textures of his coat and lace cravat. The face is modeled with Tocqué's characteristic delicate blending, achieving a convincing impression of individual character within the conventions of courtly portraiture.
