Luncheon Party in a Park
Nicolas Lancret·1735
Historical Context
Fashionable Parisians dine al fresco in this 1735 canvas from the celebrated collection of Ange-Laurent de La Live de Jully, one of the great French collectors of the mid-eighteenth century. La Live de Jully commissioned and acquired works from the leading painters of his day, and his collection later became an important source for studies of French taste. The luncheon party theme allowed Lancret to combine his skills as a painter of figures, costumes, food, and landscape in a single harmonious composition.
Technical Analysis
The luncheon table anchors the composition, surrounded by figures in animated conversation and attended by servants. Lancret arranges the scene to show both the elegant repast and the parkland beyond, creating depth through overlapping figures and receding trees. His mature palette of the mid-1730s features warm, luminous color with particular attention to the whites of table linen and the sparkle of glassware. The brushwork is fluid and assured, with quick touches defining features and textures.
