Interior of a Library (1886) by Albert Bierstadt, now in the collection of Museum of Fine Arts Boston, depicts an interior setting, placing the artist within the tradition of intimate domestic painting that connects the Dutch Golden Age masters to 19th-century Realism. Albert Bierstadt was the principal painter of the American West within the Hudson River School, translating his experience of the Rocky Mountains and Yosemite Valley into vast panoramic canvases that became the defining visual images of Manifest Destiny. Trained in Düsseldorf, he combined European academic technique with an American appetite for the epic and the sublime.
