On the Open Sea-- The Transatlantic Steamship "Péreire" by Henry Bacon

On the Open Sea-- The Transatlantic Steamship "Péreire"

Henry Bacon·1877

Historical Context

Henry Bacon was an American expatriate painter based largely in Paris who specialized in scenes of contemporary social life and ocean travel. This 1877 painting of the transatlantic steamship Péreire captures a moment of Victorian modernity: ocean travel transformed by steam into a widespread experience for the growing middle class. The Péreire was one of the French Line's flagship steamers connecting Europe and America. By painting passengers on the open sea, Bacon documented the social experience of transatlantic travel — the mix of boredom, sociability, and oceanic awe — that defined Victorian cosmopolitan life in the age of steam.

Technical Analysis

Bacon paints the open sea and deck life with a direct, observational quality drawing on contemporary realist practice. The grey-green Atlantic is rendered with convincing solidity and restless movement, while figures on deck are loosely but characterfully painted.
