Avenue de l'Opéra: Morning Sunshine
Camille Pissarro·1898
Historical Context
This 1898 Philadelphia Museum canvas shows the Avenue de l'Opera — one of Haussmann's great new Parisian boulevards, cut through the old city to connect the Palais Garnier opera house to the Louvre — in clear morning sunshine. Pissarro painted the avenue from the window of the Grand Hotel du Louvre in the same campaign that produced his other Paris urban panoramas of 1897-98. The Avenue de l'Opera, completed only in 1879, epitomized Haussmann's modernization of Paris, and Pissarro's view captures it at its commercial peak — lined with luxury shops, hotels, and a constant flow of carriages and pedestrians. The morning light casts long shadows across the wide pavement.
Technical Analysis
The elevated viewpoint creates a deep perspective recession down the boulevard toward the opera house, visible at the far end. Pissarro uses warm morning light to set the ochre building facades against a clear blue sky. Individual figures are suggested by quick, abbreviated strokes. The street surface catches light in yellows and creams contrasted with cool shadow zones.
