Winter
Historical Context
Winter at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art is part of a Four Seasons series from Fragonard's early period around 1755. The seasonal allegory was a traditional decorative program for aristocratic interiors, and Fragonard brings youthful energy to this well-established genre. The bravura brushwork—rapid, swirling strokes building luminous effects—was applied alla prima onto canvas primed with warm ochre grounds, a technique Fragonard developed after studying Tiepolo in Venice.
Technical Analysis
The cold winter palette provides a contrast to Fragonard's typically warm tonality. The bare trees and wintry sky are rendered with a somber atmospheric quality that demonstrates his range beyond sunlit garden scenes.
