Portrait of Joachim Murat by François Gérard

Portrait of Joachim Murat

François Gérard·1808

Historical Context

François Gérard's Portrait of Joachim Murat of 1808 depicts the flamboyant cavalry commander who was by then King of Naples, married to Napoleon's sister Caroline. Murat was the most spectacular of Napoleon's marshals — his theatrical courage in cavalry charges was legendary — and his elaborately embroidered uniform reflected his instinct for theatrical self-presentation. Gérard captured the martial vanity and genuine physical bravery of a man whose extraordinary career from innkeeper's son to king perfectly embodied the Imperial promise of merit-based advancement.

Technical Analysis

Gérard renders Murat's elaborate military costume with characteristic precision, capturing the king's reputation for extravagant dress. The confident pose and rich palette reflect the sitter's legendary panache and personal vanity.
