Triptych with the Last Judgement

Jehan Bellegambe painted this Triptych with the Last Judgement around 1522, one of his major altarpiece commissions in the Douai region. Bellegambe, known as 'the master of colors,' was the leading painter of the Franco-Flemish border region. Tempera on panel required careful preparation and a disciplined technique of hatched brushwork to build form and color — a demanding medium that rewarded the methodical workshop training standard in Renaissance painting practice.
