Epiphany Triptych
Master of Frankfurt·1500
Historical Context
The Master of Frankfurt painted this Epiphany Triptych around 1500. Despite his name (derived from a painting in Frankfurt), this master was active in Antwerp and was one of the most productive painters of the early 16th-century Netherlandish school. His Adoration of the Magi scenes are among his finest works, combining rich coloring with detailed narrative. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with the Master of Frankfurt's characteristic vibrant palette and meticulous detail. The triptych format provides space for elaborate staging of the kings' retinue and gifts.
