The Circumcision
Master of Frankfurt·1500
Historical Context
The Master of Frankfurt painted this Circumcision around 1500 as part of an altarpiece cycle. The Circumcision of Christ, marking his entry into the Jewish covenant, was a standard scene in the narrative cycle of Christ's Infancy. The Master's Antwerp workshop produced such scenes with characteristic attention to liturgical detail and costume. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with careful rendering of the ritual setting and participants' vestments. The Master of Frankfurt's vivid palette and precise detail work create a visually rich narrative scene.
