Annunciation (Mary)

Master of the Antwerp Adoration created this devotional painting around 1519, now in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp. The work reflects the artistic production of the High Renaissance period, when workshops across Europe produced paintings for churches, courts, and private collectors. The tempera-on-panel medium required a carefully gessoed surface and was painted in fine, precise layers, yielding a luminous, jewel-like surface of great durability.
