Angel of the Annunciation
Simone Martini·1320
Historical Context
Simone Martini painted this Angel of the Annunciation around 1320, depicting the archangel Gabriel at the moment of delivering God's message to the Virgin Mary. The Annunciation was one of Martini's signature subjects — his celebrated 1333 Annunciation for Siena Cathedral remains among the most famous paintings of the entire Gothic period. This earlier version, now in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Antwerp, shows Martini already developing the ethereal, courtly vision that would define his mature style.
Technical Analysis
Executed in egg tempera on panel with gold ground, the angel Gabriel is rendered with Martini's characteristic flowing drapery lines and otherworldly grace. The figure's elegant contrapposto, delicate wing feathering, and refined facial features exemplify the International Gothic sensibility that Martini helped pioneer.
