Woman at Prayers

Ambrosius Benson, a Bruges-based painter of Lombard origin who exported works across Europe, created this composition around 1525. The work reflects the artistic conventions and devotional culture of the High Renaissance period, when religious painting served both public worship and private contemplation across Europe. Now held at Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp, it demonstrates the artist's contribution to the rich visual culture of the early sixteenth century.
