Entombment and the Lamentaion over the dead Christ
Historical Context
The Master of Hoogstraeten painted this Entombment and Lamentation around 1500 as part of a Passion cycle. The scene combines two consecutive episodes: the mourning over Christ's body and its placement in the tomb. Such condensed narrative was common in Netherlandish altarpiece panels where space was limited. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with complex multi-figure composition showing the transition from mourning to burial. The compressed narrative and expressive figure grouping reflect Antwerp workshop conventions.
