Mater Dolorosa
Historical Context
The Master of Hoogstraeten painted this Mater Dolorosa around 1500 as a devotional close-up of the grieving Virgin. Such images were designed for private contemplation, encouraging empathetic meditation on Mary's sorrow. The format was widespread in the Southern Netherlands and Rhineland regions. The tempera-on-panel medium required a carefully gessoed surface and was painted in fine, precise layers, yielding a luminous, jewel-like surface of great durability.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with careful rendering of the Virgin's grief-stricken expression and tear-streaked face. The close-up format and restrained palette focus attention on the emotional content.
