Portrait of Pompeius Occo
Historical Context
Jacob Cornelisz van Oostsanen painted this Portrait of Pompeius Occo around 1515 for the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp. Occo was one of the wealthiest merchants in Amsterdam, a Fugger agent whose portrait testifies to the growing prosperity of the Amsterdam mercantile elite. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Portraiture in this period served multiple functions: documenting individual appearance, commemorating social status, and demonstrating the patron's wealth through the quality of the commissioned work.
Technical Analysis
The portrait presents the wealthy merchant with van Oostsanen's characteristic precise rendering and the detailed attention to costume and accessories that document the sitter's prosperous status.
