Man of Sorrows with Madonna and Saint Catherine of Alexandria
Historical Context
The Master of Saint Veronica painted this Man of Sorrows with Madonna and Saint Catherine of Alexandria around 1500 in Cologne. Named after the famous Saint Veronica painting in Munich, this master was one of the leading representatives of the Cologne school in the early 15th century. His sweetly devotional style influenced generations of Cologne painters. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.
