Christ with the Instruments of Passion
Historical Context
Goswin van der Weyden painted Christ with the Instruments of Passion in 1507, part of his commission for Abbot Tsgrooten of Tongerlo. The Arma Christi subject, showing Christ surrounded by the tools of his suffering, was a popular devotional image encouraging meditation on the Passion. Goswin's treatment maintains the Van der Weyden family tradition of restrained emotional expression. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with careful rendering of the various Passion instruments surrounding the suffering Christ. The precise Netherlandish technique and devotional focus continue the family workshop tradition.
