The Lamentation of Christ
Historical Context
Cornelis Engebrechtsz. painted this Lamentation of Christ around 1517 for the Museum of Fine Arts Ghent. Engebrechtsz. was the teacher of Lucas van Leyden, and his emotionally charged Passion paintings reflect the distinctive character of the Leiden school with its emphasis on expressive intensity over the more measured approach of the Bruges tradition. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.
Technical Analysis
The Lamentation demonstrates Engebrechtsz.'s characteristic angular figure style and vivid coloring, with the expressive grief of the mourning figures conveyed through dramatic gesture and bold color contrasts.
