Madonna with the Saints Catherine and Barbara
Historical Context
The Master of the Holy Blood painted this Madonna with Saints Catherine and Barbara in 1509 in Bruges. Named after a painting in the Chapel of the Holy Blood in Bruges, this anonymous master worked in the tradition of Gerard David. The two flanking saints were among the most popular female saints in Netherlandish devotion. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with refined Bruges technique and gentle coloring characteristic of Gerard David's circle. The three female figures are arranged in an intimate, devotional composition with careful attention to costume details.
