Virgin and Child and two angels by Master of the Bruges Legend of St. Ursula

Virgin and Child and two angels

Master of the Bruges Legend of St. Ursula·1487

Historical Context

This Virgin and Child with two angels, now in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid, reflects the commercial religious panel production for which Bruges was a major centre in the later fifteenth century. The city's prosperity as a northern European trade hub created sustained demand for devotional images among merchant families, religious institutions, and private individuals. The Master's characteristic close-up format — Madonna and child filling most of the panel surface — was well adapted to the portable devotional image market, where intimacy of encounter was as important as iconographic correctness.

Technical Analysis

The close-up format typical of this master places figures immediately at the picture surface, creating an intimate devotional encounter between viewer and sacred image. The angels' wings, rendered with feather-by-feather detail, are among the most technically demanding elements.
