View of Pirna from the West, from the Corner of Wide Street
Bernardo Bellotto·1755
Historical Context
Bellotto's View of Pirna from the West, painted around 1755 during his long Dresden period, is part of the extraordinary series of Saxon city views he produced for the Elector Augustus III. Pirna — a small town on the Elbe southeast of Dresden — appears repeatedly in Bellotto's Saxon oeuvre, and these views were valued not only aesthetically but as documentary records of the region. The Pirna series demonstrates his mature command of the topographical veduta at its most systematic.
Technical Analysis
Bellotto deploys his characteristic cool, precise light to document the town's architecture with survey-like accuracy. The composition organises the view around the Elbe river, with the town's church spires and building masses carefully arranged in spatial recession. His staffage figures are distributed with the naturalistic observation typical of his mature work.
