Philipp Peter Roos, known as Rosa da Tivoli, painted Landscape with a Grotto. Born in Frankfurt, Roos spent most of his career in Italy, specializing in pastoral landscapes with animals. His scenes of livestock in the Roman Campagna earned him his Italian nickname. The tempera-on-panel medium required a carefully gessoed surface and was painted in fine, precise layers, yielding a luminous, jewel-like surface of great durability.
