Landscape with a Grotto by Philipp Peter Roos

Landscape with a Grotto

Philipp Peter Roos·1500

Historical Context

Philipp Peter Roos, known as Rosa da Tivoli, painted Landscape with a Grotto. Born in Frankfurt, Roos spent most of his career in Italy, specializing in pastoral landscapes with animals. His scenes of livestock in the Roman Campagna earned him his Italian nickname. The tempera-on-panel medium required a carefully gessoed surface and was painted in fine, precise layers, yielding a luminous, jewel-like surface of great durability.

Technical Analysis

Oil on canvas with Roos's characteristic pastoral composition featuring animals in an Italian landscape. The warm Mediterranean light and the detailed rendering of livestock reflect his Roman career.
