Portrait of John Locke

Godfrey Kneller's portrait of John Locke from 1697, in the Hermitage, depicts the philosopher who shaped modern political thought through his Two Treatises of Government and Essay Concerning Human Understanding. Kneller painted Locke multiple times, and this version captures the thinker in his later years at Oates Manor in Essex. The portrait's journey to Russia reflects the enormous influence Locke's ideas had on Enlightenment thought across Europe.
