Esther before Ahasuerus
Jan Steen·1660
Historical Context
Esther before Ahasuerus, one of Steen's treatments of Old Testament narrative, belongs to his engagement with sacred subjects alongside his genre paintings. The Persian queen risking her life to approach the king and plead for her people offered Steen the combination of narrative drama and social observation he could apply to the royal court setting. His treatment of the biblical court as a seventeenth-century Dutch interior — peopled with figures in contemporary dress, furnished with domestic objects recognizable from his genre scenes — was characteristic of his approach to sacred narrative, domesticating the ancient and exotic within the familiar world of Dutch daily life.
Technical Analysis
The theatrical scene is staged with careful attention to the exotic costumes and architectural setting. Steen's narrative skill creates a believable moment of dramatic confrontation between the kneeling queen and the enthroned king.
