Adoration of the Christ Child, with Sts Barbara and Martin

Raffaello Botticini created this devotional painting around 1512, now in the Hermitage Museum. The work reflects the artistic production of the High Renaissance period, when workshops across Europe produced paintings for churches, courts, and private collectors. The tempera-on-panel medium required a carefully gessoed surface and was painted in fine, precise layers, yielding a luminous, jewel-like surface of great durability.
