The Adoration of the Magi
Mikołaj Obilman·1466
Historical Context
Mikołaj Obilman's Adoration of the Magi is among his most elaborate surviving compositions, requiring the organization of the complex Magi procession within the late Gothic compositional conventions of the Baltic region. The three kings with their gifts and retinues created one of the most challenging figure compositions in altarpiece painting, and Obilman's treatment demonstrates his competence in managing multiple figures within a coherent spatial setting. The work documents how international iconographic programs were adapted in the regional Polish-Prussian workshop tradition.
Technical Analysis
Obilman's treatment employs the rich coloring and detailed costume rendering characteristic of Central European Adoration scenes, with the three kings differentiated by age and ethnicity following medieval convention.
