Crucifixion from Nové Sady
Historical Context
The Crucifixion from Nové Sady, attributed to the Master of the Rajhrad Altarpiece and dated around 1440, is an important work of Bohemian Gothic painting now in the National Gallery Prague. Czech painting in the 15th century reflected a distinctive fusion of local traditions with influences from both the Netherlandish and Austrian schools. The work dates to the turbulent period of the Hussite Wars, when Bohemia's artistic traditions were disrupted by religious conflict.
Technical Analysis
The panel demonstrates the Bohemian School's characteristic blend of International Gothic elegance with emerging realism, featuring gold ground with increasingly naturalistic figures and emotional expression in the Crucifixion scene.
