Madonna in Glory with Saints
Domenico Ghirlandaio·1490
Historical Context
Madonna in Glory with Saints, painted around 1490 and held at the Bavarian State Painting Collections, depicts the Virgin in heavenly glory—ascending or enthroned above the earthly realm—with saints arranged below in the standard sacra conversazione disposition. The Munich collections preserve three Ghirlandaio panels from this period, which may have originally been part of a single polyptych or related series of works. The 'in Glory' format allowed Ghirlandaio to combine the earthly sacra conversazione with the heavenly vision, creating a more theologically elevated image than the standard enthroned Madonna.
Technical Analysis
The compositional division between the celestial upper zone—where the Virgin appears in glory, typically surrounded by clouds or golden light—and the lower zone of standing or kneeling saints creates a spatial challenge that Ghirlandaio manages through colour and scale differentiation. His characteristic bright, clear palette serves both zones effectively.
