Madonna and Child with St. John and an angel
Giuliano Bugiardini·1525
Historical Context
Giuliano Bugiardini, a Florentine painter trained alongside Michelangelo in Ghirlandaio's workshop, created this devotional panel around 1525. The composition of the Madonna with the Christ Child, young Saint John, and an angel reflects the influence of Raphael and Fra Bartolommeo, whose graceful figure types deeply shaped Bugiardini's mature style. Now in the National Museum in Warsaw, the painting exemplifies the refined Florentine devotional tradition of the early Cinquecento.
Technical Analysis
Executed in tempera on panel, the work displays Bugiardini's characteristic smooth modeling and warm palette. The carefully balanced pyramidal composition and soft sfumato transitions reveal the artist's absorption of High Renaissance ideals from his more celebrated contemporaries.
