Madonna and Child crowned by two angels by Master of Frankfurt

Madonna and Child crowned by two angels

Master of Frankfurt·1500

Historical Context

The Master of Frankfurt painted this Madonna and Child crowned by two angels around 1500. The Coronation of the Virgin by angels was a popular devotional motif combining Marian devotion with celestial imagery. The Master of Frankfurt's version reflects the Antwerp workshop tradition of producing high-quality devotional panels for the commercial market. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.

Technical Analysis

Oil on panel with vivid Antwerp coloring and detailed rendering of the angels' wings and crowning gesture. The composition balances devotional formality with the warmth characteristic of the Master's style.
