Place du Théâtre-Français and Avenue de l'Opéra, Winter Effect of Sunlight
Camille Pissarro·1898
Historical Context
Held at the National Museum of Serbia, this 1898 canvas captures the Place du Théâtre-Français and Avenue de l'Opéra in winter sunlight — one of the clearest, most structural of the avenue views. The winter sun, low in the sky, cast long shadows across the broad pavement and lit the Haussmann-era facades with golden directional light. Pissarro was systematic in his approach to the avenue: he painted it in fog, rain, and sun, morning and afternoon, creating a coherent body of work that documents the full meteorological range of Parisian winter. This version, with its clear sunlight and strong compositional lines, represents the most graphically definite of the group.
Technical Analysis
Strong winter sunlight creates a warm gold palette on the avenue facades, with deep blue-violet shadows extending across the foreground pavement. The receding avenue draws the eye deep into the composition. Pissarro's brushwork is assured: firm horizontal marks for the pavement, vertical touches for the facades and figures.
