Cours-la-Reine in Rouen, Overcast Sky
Camille Pissarro·1898
Historical Context
Painted in 1898 during his Rouen campaign, this canvas captures the Cours-la-Reine — a tree-lined embankment on the Seine at Rouen — under overcast sky. Rouen's riverbank offered a variety of subjects: bridges, quays, industrial installations, and tree-shaded promenades. The Cours-la-Reine, a formal embankment planted with trees, provided a subject that was both characteristic of French urban planning and atmospheric in its combination of trees, water, and cloudy sky. Overcast conditions were carefully studied by Pissarro, who understood that the diffuse, even light of an overcast day revealed color relationships that direct sunlight concealed.
Technical Analysis
Overcast light creates a cool, even illumination across the embankment's trees and water surface. Pissarro employs a close-valued palette of grey-green, pale buff, and cool blue-grey, with the Seine carrying slightly luminous reflections of the overcast sky. His brushwork establishes tree forms through varied directional marks.
