The Epiphany
Hieronymus Bosch·1494
Historical Context
Hieronymus Bosch painted The Epiphany around 1494, depicting the moment when the three Magi arrive to venerate the newborn Christ. This treatment of the Adoration theme is characteristic of Bosch's mature work, combining orthodox Christian iconography with his distinctive repertoire of symbolic and enigmatic details. The painting was produced during a prosperous period in 's-Hertogenbosch, when Bosch's reputation had spread beyond Brabant to attract commissions from the Burgundian-Habsburg court and Spanish collectors.
Technical Analysis
Bosch structures the scene with the Madonna and Child as a stable central axis, around which the exotic figures of the Magi create dynamic diagonal movement. The landscape background demonstrates his characteristic use of aerial perspective, with bluish-green tones dissolving into atmospheric haze at the horizon.
